BMW will finally offer Android Auto in 2020

Android Auto has slowly become a very popular offering in vehicles, but it wasn’t always that way. Back in 2017, one of the biggest car manufacturers didn’t have plans to offer Android Auto. Over 2 years later, BMW is now ready to integrate Android Auto in their vehicles, and they will start next year.

BMW announced today that they will start integrating Android Auto in cars in July of 2020. The news gets even better, though, as BMW will be using wireless Android Auto, which few automakers have adopted. As the name implies, wireless Android Auto doesn’t require your phone to be plugged in, making it substantially more convenient.

Android Auto will be included on all BMW vehicles equipped with the company’s iDrive 7.0 infotainment system and “Live Cockpit Professional” hardware. It should be available on all 2019/2020 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series sedans, as well as the newest X3, X5, X6, and X7 SUVs. The one downside to wireless Android Auto is it will only work with Pixel, Nexus, and Samsung phones.

Why the change of course? A BMW spokesperson said the company was committed to Apple CarPlay as a majority of its customers use iOS devices. However, BMW customers have “made it clear though that they would like to have Android Auto integration.” It’s nice to see a company listen to its customers.
