Google is working on fixing Android 10’s convoluted process for opening links by default
Google aims to update and improve as many areas as they can with each Android release. The OS, however, is vast, and some years certain areas get more attention than others. The pop-up that asks which app you would like to use to open something has been tweaked many times, but in Android 10 it took a major step backward. Thankfully, Google is working on a fix.
Here’s the process that most people are familiar with: you click an Instagram link and the pop-up asks if you’d like to open it with Chrome or Instagram. You have the option to open it with the desired app just that one time (and be asked again the next time) or set it as default. If you choose to make Instagram the default, you simply press the button and that’s it. Instagram opens and it will open every time following. Pretty simple.
For whatever reason, Google decided to add a bunch more steps to this process in Android 10. Initially, it looks like the same process we’re used to. However, when you press “Set to always open” to choose the default app, it takes you to the App Info page where you have to manually select “Open every time” from the “Opening links” dialog. And then after all that, it may not even take you to where you were trying to go in the first place. The process takes much longer and requires more interaction.
We are also not happy with it for the reasons you listed (and some others!) and are working on it

The change feels like progress in the opposite direction. It would make more sense for the Android 10 process to be the outdated method and the previous single tap process to be the “new and improved” method. People have been complaining about this change and it looks like Google is working on a “fix.” Glen Murphy, the Director of Design for Android, tweeted about not being happy with the current system and they are working on it.
